Song Ci: An Eminent Forensic Expert from Eight Centuries Ago

Song Ci (1186-1249), a distinguished figure in Chinese history, stands as a pioneer in forensic science. Living during the Southern Song Dynasty, his contributions to the field have left an indelible mark, earning him the title of the “father of forensic medicine” in China.

Song Ci’s most significant contribution is his groundbreaking book, “Collected Cases of Injustice Rectified” (洗冤集录 Xi Yuan Ji Lu). Completed in 1247, this work is considered the world’s first systematic forensic science manual. It compiled existing knowledge and Song Ci’s own practical experience in examining corpses and determining causes of death.  

The book covered a wide range of topics, including:

  • Identifying different types of wounds and injuries
  • Determining causes of death, such as poisoning, drowning, and strangulation  
  • Examining skeletal remains  
  • Analyzing evidence such as fingerprints and footprints
